Title
Inner-iteration preconditioning for singular linear systems

Abstract
For solving large sparse linear systems of equations, iterative methods are preferred in terms of efficiency and memory requirement. When the problem is ill-conditioned, the convergence of iterative methods tends to be slow and the convergence may be accelerated by preconditioning. However, in the singular case, iterative methods and preconditioners may fail to converge and break down. We give a necessary and sufficient condition under which the generalized minimal residual (GMRES) method finds a solution of linear systems of equations with an arbitrary index without breakdown and characterize the solution. Next, we apply this result to GMRES preconditioned by several steps of a stationary iterative method performed as inner iterations, and present theoretical justifications for using this method and classes of stationary iterative methods that can be used for inner-iteration preconditioning. Finally, numerical experiments on large sparse linear systems show that the method outperforms previous methods.

題目：Implementation of Block Algebraic Iterative Reconstruction Methods

<ABSTRACT>
Algebraic iterative methods are routinely used for solving the ill-posed
sparse linear systems arising in tomographic image reconstruction.
Here we consider the Algebraic Reconstruction Techniques (ART) and
the Simultaneous Iterative Reconstruction Techniques (SIRT), both of which
rely on semi-convergence. Block versions of these methods, based on a partitioning
of the linear system, are able to combine the fast semi-convergence of ART with
the better parallelization properties of SIRT. These block methods separate into two classes:
those that, in each iteration, access the blocks in a sequential manner,
and those that compute a result for each block in parallel and then combine these results
before the next iteration. The goal of this work is to demonstrate which block method
is best suited for implementation on modern multi-core computers.
To compare the core performance of the different block methods
we use a fixed relaxation parameter in each method, namely, the one that leads to
the fastest semi-convergence. Computational results show that for many-core computers,
the sequential approach is preferable.

All talks in plenary session. Talks on any aspect covered by the title are fine, any on numerical linear algebra, sparse optimization or on data assimilation would fit well with some of the current research at CERFACS. As always we suggest a special theme which, for this year, is in the study of how to monitor accuracy and error when solving the very large systems that we hope will become tractable when we have Exascale computing.

There is no registration fee and a limited amount of very low cost accommodation is available on site at the Meteo residences.

Registration and requests for accommodation should be sent to Brigitte
Yzel (brigitte.yzel@cerfacs.fr). The deadline for doing this is 30 April 2013. However, it will help greatly with our planning if you can let us know in advance of that deadline that you plan to come. Titles and abstracts for presentations of 30 minutes (although you can offer a shorter talk if you wish) should be sent to Xavier Vasseur (vasseur@cerfacs.fr). The deadline is the same (30 April) but these can be sent later than the registration.

タイトル：A Numerical Look at Quotients of the Orthogonal Group
概要： The problem of measuring distance between a pair of linear subspaces was considered several times between 1875 and 1975 by researchers including Jordan, Hotelling, Davis, Kahan, James, Wilkinson, Bj\"{o}rck, and Golub. Just missing the one-hundredth anniversary of Jordan's pioneering work, in 1977 Stewart formulated the CS decomposition, translating the geometric problem of measuring angles into an algebraic problem of computing a matrix decomposition. We will review this material and then extend the discussion to flags, i.e., nested sequences of linear subspaces. We will argue that the geometric problem of finding geodesics on the flag manifold can be reduced to an algebraic problem of computing canonical representatives in the quotient group O(n)/(O(k_1)\cdots O(k_p)). An algorithm for computing the canonical representatives will be presented.
